2022 has come with a new and improved logo for one of the most popular podcasts and music streaming services, Spotify. The new logo gives its users a hint on what to expect from the industry the company is working in.
Despite being a young company, Spotify underwent two significant logo designs before finally settling on a more edgy design that we all now know of. It’s distinctive bright, even acid, colour pallets make it unique as it stands out from fellow competitors.
The original Spotify logo, released in 2008, showed a bold green square badge featuring playful lettering along its sides. The inscription in the top and bottom portions were rendered in a white outline serif typeface. The three arches depicted the sound of music that Spotify finds for its users. Designer Michael Robertson designed the logo.
Spotify redesigned its logo in 2013, making it cleaner and less aggressive looking. A circular emblem was placed on the left side of the logo, while the old logo had it on the right side. The new inscription was written in a bolder yet elegant sans-serif font, with thick rounded lines and sharp cuts. The green circle was thicker and darker than before, with three thin black outlines.
In 2015, the Spotify logo was once again changed. It is still written in the same typeface but is now drawn in a light green colour, embedded with three white lines. The word marks letters were enlarged, making them stand out for their friendliness and approachability. Green stands for growth, success, and progress. It is an attractive colour that draws attention. And the music streaming service seems to be very successful.
The Story Behind The New Spotify Logo
2022 happens to be the year Spotify released a new logo design after trying the same twice in 2008 and 2015. The original design had many problems. The name was not big enough, there was too much clutter, and it looked like an ad. So Spotify hired Andreas Holmström to change that. He removed the clutter, made the letters bigger, and added a gradient. The result is a cleaner and easier-to-read logo. Now when someone sees the Spotify logo, they recognise it immediately.
The logo was redesigned to be easier to read and understand. It isn’t meant to represent any particular music genre or artist. Instead, it represents the company itself.
Spotify’s new logo is inspired by the original Spotify logo designed by Tobias Frere-Jones but modified with rounded edges and a circular dot on top of the letter ‘i’. The font is called ‘Gotham’, similar to the original Gotham design in shape and appearance; however, the designers at Spotify wanted something slightly different.
Spotify chose the “Proxima Nova” font because it reminded them of their old logo. They liked that it was simple and clean but still had a bit of personality. After choosing Proxima Nova, the designers started thinking about what they could do with it. They decided to keep the series on the ends of letters but cut out the rest of the letters.
